Obafemi Awolowo University Description

About Obafemi Awolowo University

Obafemi Awolowo University formerly called the University of Ife is a Federal Government Owned University founded in 1962 and was subsequently renamed Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987 to commemorate the first premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
OAU as the University is fondly called was established in rebuttal to the perceived politicization of higher education in Nigeria and the western region and also to fill the gaps in manpower needs.

With a mission “to promote by research and other means the advancement of knowledge and its practical application to social, cultural, economic, scientific and technological problems”; the University started the first Faculty of Pharmacy in West Africa, the first department of Chemical Engineering and the first Electronics component in addition to Electrical Engineering.
