Why you should self-isolate if you are a returning traveler

As it stands, various measures to mitigate the spread of corona virus are being enforced. All international airports have been closed in Nigeria, domestic flights are being regulated. Travel restrictions have been imposed on all non-essential travels. This is to prevent the rapid spread of the pandemic.

What is self-isolation?

Self-isolation is all about public safety and limiting the spread of corona virus. Self-isolation is simply staying indoors and avoiding any form of contact with people including members of your household. You are to self-isolate if you are a returning traveler or you?ve had contact with a confirmed case.

For anyone with travel history from affected states, it is mandatory to self-isolate for a minimum of 14 days.  After which if you develop any of the symptoms relating to corona virus such as cough, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose or sore throat then you are to isolate yourself from members of your household for a minimum of 10 days from the beginning of your symptoms and this should continue till your symptoms resolve and you feel better.

Complying with all of these directives ensures public safety as the pandemic spread is limited and also encourages health workers who are at the forefront of the battle.

If you are self-isolating, make sure you keep to the following instructions:

  • Ensure your room is well ventilated
  • Clean your room every day with a disinfectant
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes using tissue and throw them in the bin immediately
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizers in the absence of soap
  • Do not share anything with members of your household
  • Ensure to keep in touch with your doctor if need be
  • Maintain a healthy diet and take a lot of fluids
  • Keep away from the elderly and fragile ones anyone with underlying health conditions
