Coronavirus situation in Nigeria

Nigeria has reported that 12 out of its 36 states have registered confirmed cases of coronavirus otherwise known as COVID-19. The megacity, Lagos, is the epicentre with 81 confirmed cases with the Federal Capital coming in second with 25 confirmed cases. Here is a breakdown of the states:

Amidst concerns that low testing capacity is the reason Nigeria still has a moderate number as it is widely believed that there are potential carriers that are yet to be tested, the NCDC is planning to expand by creating 7 more labs in addition to its current 6 accredited labs across Nigeria

States on lockdown in Nigeria

A press briefing held by the President, Muhammadu Buhari, declared that Lagos, Ogun, and F.C.T be placed on total lockdown leaving only organizations offering essential services. This was done in a bid to contain the spread of the virus and afford the NCDC ample time to efficiently manage the situation. In President Buhari?s words, "We will use this containment period to identify, trace and isolate all individuals that have come into contact with confirmed cases". Other states like Rivers and Kaduna have also been placed on lockdown by their state governors.

The Nigerian government is proactively making efforts to curb the pandemic. Being Africa?s most populous population, the major focus is on reducing the spread of COVID-19 hereby flattening the curve because failure to do so would have devastating effects. More isolation centres have been set up, medical equipments have been purchased and health workers are undergoing more training as the country continues to brace itself.
